This article explores the current measures in place to address misinformation and extremism online, and outlines additional strategies that could enhance these efforts.

Current Solutions in the Fight Against Misinformation and Extremism

Several social media platforms and apps have implemented features and policies aimed at reducing the spread of false information and extremist ideologies. Here are some of the notable efforts:

Fact-Checking Initiatives

  • Facebook: Partners with third-party fact-checkers to review and label false information.
  • Twitter: Flags tweets that contain disputed or misleading information, particularly around sensitive topics like elections and public health and lets users add information about a biased or false claim.
  • Google: Implements fact-checking tags in search results and on YouTube videos.
